Remembering World War II and "I'll be home for Christmas"

Depot Museum

It was a time of considerable sacrifice. Young men and women left their small communities, having never traveled more than a few miles from their homes. It was War, and they were called on to do their part in a strange land far away from family and friends. From 1941-45, this Depot Museum exhibit, "Remembering World War II," shares the artifacts of local young men and women that ventured abroad in service of their country.

The Gold Nugget Depot Museum is open Saturdays and Sundays, 12 noon to 4pm. Located at the Paradise Community Park, at Pearson and Black Olive Roads (adjacent to the Yellowstone Kelly Memorial Trail), Paradise, California.

The Gold Nugget Museum's Veteran's Day exhibit, Remembering WWII, is on display at the Depot this year. The exhibit is a salute to the men and women who served in WWII. Army, Navy and Marine uniforms of the era are on display.

Items belonging to local servicemen are featured. Ed Parker's aviator's cap, Allen Reed's jacket and photo of him with the 81st Infantry, and Neal F. Albright's musette bag can be seen. Other items include photos and items from the 33rd Army Field Hospital, a field telephone, a bronze star, canteen, ration stamps, copies of Stars and Stripes and Yank newspapers, and an Air Raid Warden's helmet and armband.

On November 13th some of the items in this display will be removed and a living room scene will be created. It will feature a 40's living room with a period tree decorated with 40's ornaments and a vintage radio cabinet. The name of the exhibit will change to- I'll be Home for Christmas.

To highlight our WW II local servicemen and women, we have begun researching their names and obtaining their photos. The photos will be turned into ornaments which will be hung on the tree.
